Ryan Giggs: These two players are key to Manchester United’s title challenge

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has said that his former club remain the prime challengers to Manchester City for the 2017/18 Premier League title. United have lost ground on their cross-town rivals over the past month, and they presently trail the Citizens by eight points at the top of the table.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Giggs, who is United’s all-time appearance holder, suggested that United remain contenders for the English crown with the returns of Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic likely to benefit the club in the backend of the campaign.

He said: “I still see Manchester United as the main title rivals for City this season, with Jose Mourinho’s record being key, while he should have Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to come back when you really need those big-game players to make an impact.”

Pogba had been a huge influence in the first four league games for United, where he contributed two goals and two assists. He followed to sustain a hamstring injury during the 3-0 Champions League win over Basel, and he has since stepped his recovery to return to full training with the reserve squad last week.

The France international is unlikely to be risked for the Newcastle United game this weekend with an important derby against Manchester City coming up in early December.

Meanwhile, Ibrahimovic is currently on an individual training regime after his knee injury, and he could make his first competitive appearance of the season – before the turn of the year.
