Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville insists Jose Mourinho will have to change his tactics for the big games on the road if Manchester United are to lift the Premier League title this season.
United played with a defensive mindset during Saturday’s 0-0 draw versus Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, and they managed just one shot on target, which Romelu Lukaku hit straight at goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.
A number of first-team players including Marcus Rashford sustained knocks on international duty, and this saw the Portuguese tactician juggle his options with Ashley Young playing in a more advanced position.
Speaking after the game, Neville feels Mourinho must change his approach for the big games as points dropped on their travels could hamper their chances of securing the English crown.
“It needs to (change). If you’re going to win the league they’ll have to be better than that away from home in the big games. They’ll have to, they’ll have to make sure they counter-attack better,” Neville told Sky Sports h/t The Star.
“The defending part is very good, the resilience, the strength, the defending, the goalkeeper. But you then have to go and score the goals away from home. He knows what he needs to do, he knows his team will have to do better than that away from home in the future in the big games.”
Cross-city rivals Manchester City bagged a resounding 7-2 triumph over Stoke City on Saturday, and they are now two points ahead of United atop of the table. Despite the season just eight games old, the Citizens appear to have evolved under Pep Guardiola, and United have some work to do this month in order to stay within the leader’s grasp. Manchester United face the likes of Tottenham and Chelsea in the next three weeks.
