Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has lavished Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic with high praise before expressing his desire to see the Serbian at Liverpool.
Manchester United splashed around £40million to acquire the services of Nemanja Matic from Chelsea this summer and it seemed like the Red Devils had overpaid for a player who is nearing his 30’s.
However, Matic is undoubtedly a quality player and the Serbian international proved his worth with a stunning performance during the Red Devils’ 4-0 victory over West Ham United in the Premier League opener on Sunday.
Many were unsurprisingly very impressed with Matic’s performance during the clash with West Ham and now even Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has gone on to lavish the 29-year-old with high praise.
Gerrard revealed that he is a big fan of Matic and stated his belief that if the ex-Chelsea star were to be playing for Liverpool, he would have helped the Reds reach the next level.
The former England captain said, “Looking at them at the weekend… Matic. He’s a very good player. I’m a huge fan of Matić. We haven’t got a natural, sitting holding midfielder at the moment.
“Jordan Henderson has done a fantastic job in there at times last season, obviously struggled with injury at times, and we’ve got Emre Can as well but for me they are suited as well to be No. 8s that can get into the box.
“I think that all those players – [Georginio] Wijnaldum, Henderson and Can – would all benefit from having a real big monster of a central midfielder in there who can break up play and help Liverpool be a bit more secure when they pile so many numbers forward.
“Obviously I don’t want to create any headlines and stuff, but I am a huge fan of Matic. Looking at this weekend, I think he’s the right piece of the jigsaw that Jose [Mourinho] needs.”
