Robin Van Persie’s move from Old Trafford this Summer hasn’t shocked anyone- least of all the man himself who’s admitted he knew the writing was on the wall for quite some time. The former Arsenal striker has completed his move to Turkish giants Fenerbahce and was candid about the end of his time at United.
Van Persie admitted:
“It was a situation where I could see it coming, if I’m really honest.”
“I could get used to the idea for quite a bit. It was not a situation where it was just happening from day to day so I could get used to the situation – that is football.”
It’s easy to be dismissive of Van Persie’s time at United, especially when you look at his final two years but it would be foolish to ignore the importance he played in winning title number 20. When we look back at United’s greatest strikers, RVP will always have a special place somewhere below the very top rung thanks to that wonderful season he gave us when he arrived in 2012. 58 goals in three seasons may not be a phenomenal return, but the 30 he bagged in his first season made the title win a ‘saunter’ not a ‘race.’
