‘Stroke of genius’, Robbie Savage praises Man United’s summer signing

Former Wales international Robbie Savage has been hugely impressed with the way Nemanja Matic has performed since his move from Stamford Bridge. The 29-year-old was United’s third signing of the summer transfer window after he arrived from Chelsea for an initial fee of £35m.

Matic has played in every game for United since the start of the season, and Savage has heaped praise in the Serbian who has got the best out of Paul Pogba this term, he told Goal.com: “The more and more I look at it, it looks like a bargain. Considering his experience and what he’s won in the game.”

“I think the best piece of business in the window is Matic to Manchester United. That has allowed Pogba to go and produce the displays he’s doing. United to get Matic to allow Pogba to play as well as he’s playing is a stroke of genius.”

Meanwhile, the former Manchester United graduate was also surprised as to why Matic was sold in the first place after describing the Serbia international as ‘a wonderful player’, he added: “You can see what he’s added to Manchester United already. He’s a wonderful player so I’m surprised Chelsea let him go.”

Pogba sustained a hamstring injury in the 3-0 Champions League triumph over Basel last week, and this will certainly see a split in the partnership with the Frenchman sidelined for up to 12 weeks with potential tendon damage.

The likes of Ander Herrera, Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick are all capable of replacing Pogba in midfield, but Matic may have the task of creating more opportunities in the Frenchman’s absence.
