Reputed journalist Duncan Castles has claimed that Jose Mourinho will sanction the exits of Matteo Darmian and Daley Blind during this summer’s transfer window. The pair barely featured for United during the second half of the previous campaign and this has linked them with probable exits from Old Trafford.
Speaking on the Transfer Window podcast, Castles said that the United manager is looking to reinforce his backline during the summer and both Darmian and Blind could be sacrificed to push through the transfer deals.
He said: “[Antonio] Valencia will remain as first-choice right-back but he wants a backup who can put pressure on him. And he wants a top quality leader, experienced centre-back in there. [Danny] Blind and [Matteo] Darmian for sure are on their way out.”
The age of Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young at the right and left-back positions has genuinely become a concern ahead of next season and Mourinho appears keen on finding a competitor for the former, though the Ecuadorian remains the first choice.
Club graduate Timothy Fosu-Mensah has been touted by many as a probable successor to Valencia but Mourinho is supposedly looking at experienced options with Valencia’s Joao Cancelo and Southampton’s Cedric Soares on the summer wishlist.
