Team News: Jose Mourinho confirms two starters for Basel game

Manchester United head coach Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof will make their Champions League bow when the club entertain Basel at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

The Red Devils will be without Eric Bailly and Phil Jones through respective European suspensions imposed by UEFA, and this will see Mourinho test his backup options for the first-time in more than a month.

Speaking in his press conference following the Stoke game, Mourinho confirmed that Lindelof and Smalling will start at the heart of the defence for the visit of the Swiss champions, he said“He’s playing [Jones] well for us. He’s probably tired with two consecutive matches with the national team but he cannot play on Tuesday so it’s good that on Tuesday he gets his rest and it’s an opportunity for Smalling and Lindelof to play the Champions League match.”

Both Lindelof and Smalling were paired up together for the 2-1 European Super Cup loss to Real Madrid in August, and they will be hoping to provide a much better performance in United’s return to the Champions League on Tuesday.

Portuguese giants Benfica remain the strongest opponents in the group, but CSKA Moscow could yet pose a potential threat as a trip to Moscow could always be taxing.

Manchester United are currently top of the Premier League standings following a 2-2 draw at Stoke City last weekend, and Mourinho will surely demand more from his players in the midweek clash.
