Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has decided to rest the likes of David de Gea, Antonio Valencia, Eric Bailly and Nemanja Matic for Wednesday night’s League Cup game against Burton Albion. The Red Devils have still named a strong 19-man squad which includes Marcus Rashford, Juan Mata and Anthony Martial – all of whom could feature from the off versus Burton.
United’s previous meeting with Burton came in a third round FA Cup tie back in 2006 where the then-Conference club held on to a 0-0 draw at the Pirelli Stadium. However, the replay at Old Trafford was pretty much one-sided with Sir Alex Ferguson’s side dominating the play in a convincing 5-0 victory. Giuseppe Rossi bagged a brace in the match.
Jose Mourinho’s side are currently tied on points with Manchester City at the top of the league standings, and it should be a comfortable game versus Burton, who are lingering near the Championship drop zone in 19th place.
Despite the absence of a few first-team players, Mourinho is expected to name a strong starting lineup for the League Cup as his side look to defend the title, which is often given the lowest priority amongst all other competitions.
