Manchester United take on Champions League holders Real Madrid in the European Super Cup clash in Skopje, Macedonia on Tuesday. The Red Devils qualified for the competition through their Europa League final triumph over Ajax and Jose Mourinho will have his sights on getting a morale-boosting victory over his former club.
Early Team News
As United fans would know, both Eric Bailly and Phil Jones are due to serve two-match European suspensions starting with the Super Cup. Bailly was sent off in the semi-final against Celta Vigo for which he has already served a one-match suspension. However, UEFA do not seem lenient after they handed a further two-game ban earlier last month. Meanwhile, Jones was handed a similar two-match ban for swearing at a doping officer in the final, and according to the United’s official website, he is unlikely to participate despite talks over an appeal.
Juan Mata and Ander Herrera had struggled with ankle and rib injuries respectively earlier in pre-season, but they look perfectly fine after they both participated in the games against Valerenga and Sampdoria. Luke Shaw, Ashley Young and Marcos Rojo are all long-term absentees as said earlier by Jose Mourinho, and they are likely to watch the game from the stands at best at the Philip II Arena.
