The moment Van Gaal knew United needed a Galactico

The term Galactico, whilst usually associated with Real Madrid, has become synonymous with a big name big money signing and Louis Van Gaal has admitted that Man United are in the hunt for one.

The club’s first foray into the world of Galactico’s hasn’t quite gone to plan with Angel Di Maria set to leave the club for PSG this summer after a massively disappointing return for the £60m United spent to get him to Old Trafford.

But United will not be deterred.

Speaking at a presser during United’s pre season tour of America, the manager referenced the game that highlighted United’s need for a big name match winner:

“Chelsea have Hazard, he can always make goals, he can always make an action and decide a goal. Chelsea also have Willian and Oscar. Manchester City have [Sergio] Agüero, it’s the same type. Barcelona has [Lionel] Messi, Neymar and [Luis] Suárez. We as Manchester United have to compete with these clubs, so we have to look also for that kind of players… At Chelsea, we didn’t score and they scored and that is the difference in the game. If we had won that game, the gap would have been five points and the pressure was high [on Chelsea].”

Players of that standard don’t come cheap and are hard to come by.

United have been linked with a move for former player Cristiano Ronaldo, but with the frosty relationship between the two clubs due to negotiations for David De Gea and Sergio Ramos, it is unlikely that that deal will take place. You also have to factor in the cost and Ronaldo’s age and the deal becomes even more less unlikely.

The Sun are reporting that Van Gaal will look to sign a Galactico this summer, but who will it be and can they get their man?
