Arsenal-legend-turned pundit Thierry Henry feels Manchester United will be favourites to sign Gareth Bale, should Real Madrid place him in the transfer market this summer.
The Wales international had a decent pre-season with the European champions, but his future has been put into doubt due to Los Blancos’ ongoing pursuit of Kylian Mbappe.
Mbappe, 18, enjoyed a brilliant 26-goal season with Monaco last term, and Los Blancos are prepared to cough up a fee of around £160m in order to pursue him from the Ligue 1 holders.
Jose Mourinho is desperate to bring in a wide player before this month’s deadline, and a deal for Ivan Perisic looks far from happening with Inter Milan reluctant to lower their £49m asking price.
As a result, United could look into other options including Bale, who remains one of Jose Mourinho’s favourite players. Speaking to Sky Sports’ The Debate Show, Henry insisted that Bale would easily adapt to any league, but he tips Mourinho to win the race for his signature – should the opportunity arise.
He said: “[Bale] is made for every league. If he becomes available I don’t think it will only be Man Utd going in for him. But on the other side how many teams could compete with what Manchester United could offer?”
“When you have a guy like Gareth Bale he gives you another dimension. If he leaves I’m sure [Mourinho] will try and buy him – and if he comes then watch out everybody.”
Bale, who is valued at around £90m, has been named in the starting lineup for tonight’s European Super Cup clash versus Manchester United, and Mourinho will hope to keep the Welshman calm in order to achieve his first triumph in the competition.
