Thierry Henry: This Man United star may consider leaving

Sky Sports pundit Thierry Henry has suggested that Marcus Rashford may have to pursue a fresh challenge elsewhere, should he fail to command a regular starting role with Manchester United.

The England international was one of the first names on the teamsheet during the backend of the previous campaign, but the arrivals of Romelu Lukaku and most-recently Alexis Sanchez have dropped him down the pecking order.

Speaking on Sky Sports, via, Henry believes Rashford could be hampered in his progress, if he is restricted to a role on the substitutes’ bench in next couple of years.

“One of the most important things for me is that you have to play. You cannot be on the bench and missing games, missing learning about the game and stopping that momentum, and an example is Rashford. Rashford at times could not capitalise on what he did from that year [after his debut], because sometimes he is playing on the right, [sometimes] on the left,” he said.

“Leave is a strong word. Obviously being from there, he wants to play for United. But he has to play and it is becoming even more difficult for him since Sanchez has arrived. I think at the end of the season, he is maybe going to have a thinking day of ‘do I stay?’”

Rashford had started the season as the first-choice on the left side of the attack, but Anthony Martial have since managed to performed better than the United graduate with three Player of the Month accolades this term.

The Newcastle game on Sunday was the first time Rashford has failed to take the playing field for United this season, but there is a concern over his gametime, which may hamper his confidence for club and country.

Martial has also struggled to maintain his goalscoring run since Sanchez’s arrival with Jose Mourinho more inclined to play the Chilean in his preferred left-wing role, which has pushed Martial onto the right flank, where he is uncomfortable crossing the ball.
