‘What a time to be alive’, Manchester United fans react to midfielder’s performance against FC Basel

Belgium international Marouane Fellaini earned the plaudits from Manchester United fans following his man of the match performance against FC Basel on Tuesday night.

The 29-year-old came onto the pitch midway through the first-half after skipper on the night, Paul Pogba hobbled off the ground with a hamstring injury.

Fellaini bagged a goal and assist for United in the remaining 70 minutes, and the fans were clearly pleased with the partnership between Young and the Belgian.

Young made a surprise start ahead of Antonio Valencia at right-back, but he proved his importance with a brilliant assist for Fellaini, who opened the scoring with a bullet header.

Fellaini has been linked with a whole lot of clubs over the past year, but Tuesday’s performance has cemented his place under Jose Mourinho, who has previously insisted that he is ‘too important’ to his plans.

With the Belgian on the field, United normally go more direct with their style of play, and although it is not impressive to the eye, the result is what matters in the end.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan missed two glorious chances to put United ahead in the first period, but this was soon covered by Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford, who sealed a 3-0 win over the Swiss champions.

United will be back on Premier League duty with Everton on Sunday, and it will be interesting to see who partners Nemanja Matic at the heart of the midfield following Fellaini’s standout showing.
