Former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney believes the club should spend on at least two more signings in order to close the gap on champions Manchester City for the forthcoming campaign.
United have remained relatively quiet in the transfer window over the past month and they are now facing a decisive Transfer Deadline Day which may make or break their Premier League challenge.
Amidst this, Rooney has shared a similar opinion and believes a couple of more signings could transform Jose Mourinho’s team into genuine title challengers alongside the Citizens.
“I think it will be difficult [to catch Manchester City] after the season they had last year. They have been playing some great football,” he said. But I hope someone can catch them – it would be nice, so hopefully Manchester United can. I think maybe another signing or two. I am sure Jose [Mourinho] has been getting the team right.”
United boss Jose Mourinho has expressed a keen interest in signing a centre-back before the transfer deadline and the next couple of hours could give an indication whether the club are close to signing anyone.
Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld, Leicester’s Harry Maguire and Bayern Munich’s Jerome Boateng are apparently on the Portuguese’s wishlist heading into the dying hours of the summer transfer window.
