Guillermo Varela’s career at Manchester United could be over as the Championship side Sunderland are interested in bringing him to the Stadium of Light.
The newly relegated Black Cats are looking to strengthen their squad for the upcoming season, and the Uruguayan right-back is their first choice. Varela is clearly behind Antonio Valencia and Matteo Darmian in the pecking order, and after a horrific display against Liverpool in the 2015-16 Europa League clash, he lost his place on the team for good.
Jose Mourinho doesn’t think he is good enough to stay at Old Trafford and didn’t include the defender in his pre-season squad that left for the US last week. Varela’s current contract with the Red Devils expires in 12 months, so Sunderland could take him on loan rather than to pay cash, as he evidently will not get an extension from Mourinho. In case Manchester decide to sell him, the Black Cats would need between £1 million and £2 million, but the Red Devils will definitely try to offload him in this transfer window.
Guillermo Varela started his career at Penarol in 2010 and then moved to Manchester United in 2013, but only managed to appear in 11 matches for the Red Devils, four of which were in the Premier League. The 24-year-old spent some time on loan at Real Madrid’s Castilla, while last year he played for the Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt. Varela represented Uruguay U20 team on 26 occasions but still didn’t appear for the senior team.
