Manchester United have continued to struggle with the center-forward position over the years, and they tried to resolve it by signing Rasmus Hojlund ahead of last season.
The Dane is a promising young striker, and the Red Devils thought he would be an option for the next decade. However, he has found it difficult to lead the line of a club of United’s stature at this young age.
News – Report – Man Utd confident of securing key signing for under £50million
Joshua Zirkzee was hired last summer to support the former Atalanta star, but he couldn’t address Man Utd’s goal-scoring issues either before sustaining a season-ending injury.
Therefore, it has been reported that Ruben Amorim is keen on strengthening the No.9 position by purchasing a new striker, and Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford.
Arsenal are said to be interested in signing him as well and have already opened talks to persuade him to join. Now, Football Insider state that the Gunners are ready to do everything to secure his service.
However, the report says that it Man Utd appear to have taken control of the deal after working hard behind the scenes, and they may have already won this race. So, this would be a huge blow for Arsenal.
Gyokeres is open to joining Man Utd to reunite with his former boss, Amorim, even without Champions League football.
Sporting are prepared to cash-in on the 26-year-old this summer and are willing to accept a fee of around £55m-£70m with his current contract set to run until 2028.
The 26-year-old has netted 38 goals in the Portuguese league so far this term and no one comes close to him. Benfica’s Pavlidis and Porto’s Aghehowa are in joint second position with 18 goals.
In all competitions, the Swede has so far featured in 49 games for the Lions and directly contributed in 64 goals (52 goals and 12 assists)
He has been in stellar goal-scoring form and already knows everything about Amorim’s system. Therefore, he shouldn’t take much time to settle down, should he eventually move to Old Trafford during the off-season.
