Manchester United are set to suffer perhaps the biggest defeat in this transfer window with Chelsea closing in on signing Ten Hag’s primary midfield target, Frenkie de Jong.
As per today’s version of Sport (news image provided below), the Blues have practically agreed a fee with Barcelona worth more than 80 million euros (£67.4m+ fixed plus bonuses) to hire the services of the Dutchman.
Transfer: Deal close – Man Utd take significant steps to agree terms to seal £14.4m signing – Report
A week back, the Stamford Bridge outfit communicated to Barca their total dedication to completing the signing of the former Ajax player.
In the last few hours, they moved in with a forceful proposal and are close to reaching full agreement with the Blaugrana. In doing so, they would overtake Man Utd’s offer.
The Catalan media outlet claim the only thing left now is to convince De Jong to join Chelsea. The 25-year-old knows that he needs to take a final decision soon.
A few days ago, the ex Eredivisie player had no idea he would be leaving for London but he understands that it is the best solution for all parties.
Sport claim Chelsea are prepared to put everything on the table to convince the midfielder to sign for Thomas Tuchel’s team. They are ready to seal a contract that will make him earn as much as he gets at Barcelona i.e. around £260,000-a-week (El Pais).
It seems that Man Utd have lost the race to sign De Jong because the Blues can offer Champions League football. The Old Trafford faithful may have to settle for Adrien Rabiot.
