Barcelona, who have already reached an agreement with Manchester United, have been pressing Frenkie de Jong to sign for the Red Devils.
However, the Dutch international has been reluctant to move to Old Trafford and wishes to stay at the Nou Camp (Sport).
Transfer: Man Utd can create problems for Man City by sealing £73million signing – Report
Last night, Barca collided against Inter Miami and won the pre-season game 6-0. De Jong was on the bench in the first half and was brought on later in the game to feature in an unusual position.
The 25-year-old midfielder played as a center back in the second half (Mundo Deportivo).
Usually, the former Ajax man has featured in the right central midfield role for the Nou Camp outfit. However, vs Inter Milani, that position was occupied by 19-year-old, Pablo Torre.
In the first half, Pedri, Kessie and Gonzalez featured in the midfield, on the other hand, in the second 45 minutes, Xavi used Busquets, Gavi and Torre in the center of the park.
De Jong had to partner Uruguayan international, Ronaldo Araujo, in the central defense (Pique’s position) and that might be another move made by Barca to force the player to reconsider his future at the club.
The Dutchman prefers to play in the deep lying midfield role, a position in which he excelled at Ajax under Ten Hag. However, Busquets has mainly played in the DM role for Barca, who have also brought Kessie to reinforce the position. Last month, De Jong claimed (NOS via The Mail):
“I like to be the first player to receive the ball from the defenders. In the national team I play differently compared to Barca. And I think this one fits me better”
Now, playing as a center back should give him a clear indication that he needs to leave Barcelona this summer. What do you think?
