If reports in the media are anything to go by then Manchester United are close to signing Tom Heaton to replace Sergio Romero at the club.
The Argentine star was mainly the second choice goalie behind De Gea but this season, with Dean Henderson returning from loan, he has been out of the squad.
Transfer: Man Utd hell-bent to secure £80million signing – Report
According to The Daily Telegraph, Man Utd are on the verge of bringing Heaton back as they look for a back-up to Henderson and De Gea.
The British source have claimed that Romero’s current contract with the Red Devils will expire next month and he is linked with a move to Roma, who will be managed by Jose Mourinho next season.
The South American shot stopper was a key member of Mou’s squad that won the Europa League in the 2016-17 campaign. It is stated that the 96-capped international has got an Italian passport and therefore, other Serie A teams are interested in hiring his services as well. To replace him, Man Utd have move fast to lure Heaton
The 35-year-old goalie started his career with the Old Trafford club but he mainly rose to fame with Burnley. In the 2015-16 campaign, he kept 20 clean sheets in the Championship winning season. In the 2016-17 season, the 3-capped international kept 10 clean sheets in the Premier League for the Clarets.
In 2019, he moved to Aston Villa but after featuring in 20 league games, in January 2020, he suffered a serious knee injury and since then, he has not made a single senior appearance for the Birmingham based side. Villa signed Martinez last summer and the former Arsenal man has been highly impressive under the management of Dean Smith.
In all honesty, Romero has been treated unfairly. Last season, he helped Man Utd reach the semi finals of both the Europa League and the FA Cup but Solskjaer decided to use De Gea and the decision backfired. The 34-year-old star wanted to leave last year, Everton made a loan offer and were even ready to pay his £100,000-a-week salary but the Red Devils rejected the move (The Athletic).
Fortunately, his sad treatment at Old Trafford will end next month with his contract expiring on 30th June.
