Manchester United wanted to sign Cody Gakpo in the summer transfer window but after capturing Antony, the did not have enough budget left to lure the Dutchman.
According to Forbes, the Red Devils thought they could hire Antony for £50million and Gakpo for around £25million.
In the end, the Old Trafford club had to pay £85million to secure the Brazilian international from Ajax but there were no funds left to bring in the PSV Eindhoven playmaker.
The news source claim the 23-year-old star is is still a leading target for the 20-time English champions and it is likely that they will look to conclude a deal in the near future.
Man Utd already agreed a contract (The Athletic) with Gakpo in the summer but did not make an offer to snap him up from the Eredivisie side.
As per Forbes, the Saints and Leeds made moves for him in the summer but the player opted to stay in Holland, aware that Man Utd will move again to secure his signing.
Just like £50million were not enough to sign Antony, it is likely that a fee of £25million would not be enough to lure the reigning Dutch Footballer of the Year, who has started the season in top-class fashion. He could cost around £53.6m (Eindhovens Dagblad).
In just 13 appearances for PSV this term, he has already netted 10 goals and provided no fewer than 9 assists in all competitions.
In the UEFA Nations League group, he directly contributed in 3 goals in the last 3 games to help the Netherlands reach the finals of the tournament. The 9-capped international set up the winning goal in the last contest against Belgium.
In your opinion, should Man Utd submit a bid to sign Cody Gakpo in January?
