Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Phil Jones will recover from his hip problem – prior to this weekend’s Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur.
The England international was substituted just 23 minutes into the Huddersfield clash last weekend after he felt evident discomfort that restricted him from carrying on.
His replacement Victor Lindelof struggled to make much of an impression as two defensive errors cost United dearly in a 2-1 defeat at the John Smith’s Stadium.
United secured progress to the quarter-final stage of the League Cup with a 2 -0 win over Swansea City on Tuesday night, and shortly after the game, Mourinho revealed that Jones could return to the starting XI for the Spurs game on Saturday.
“I believe that Phil [Jones] will be fit for Saturday against Tottenham, but apart from that I have no news.” he is quoted as saying by The Express.
Playing Lindelof against Spurs could be suicidal, to say the least – given the form Harry Kane has been in over the past couple of months. As a result, Jones will most probably be risked ahead of Lindelof, who looked nervous during the recent League Cup triumph.
Mourinho previously hinted that Eric Bailly could return to first-team training during the week, and it will be interesting to see whether the manager has the option of pairing the Ivorian alongside Jones once more.
