Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has urged Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho to invest in the defensive department before this month’s transfer deadline. The Red Devils have clinched successive 4-0 wins over West Ham United and Swansea City in the Premier League this term, and this has put them comfortably at the top of the table due to a superior goal difference.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Gerrard admits that Mourinho’s side are more than capable of winning the Premier League this season, but reckons that the club should pursue a central defender and a left-back prior to this month’s transfer deadline.
“I think they’ve got the squad compete for the title now. But it can improve in certain areas. I still think they need a top-class left-back. I’m still not sure the centre half partnership is one of a (Rio) Ferdinand and (Nemanja) Vidic. They’re the areas for me if you’re being ultra fussy,” he told Sky Sports h/t The Express.
Eric Bailly and Phil Jones have formed a great partnership at the heart of the defence, but the pair could face the real test when they take on the big clubs later on in the season. The left-back position, though, does look a concern with Daley Blind not entirely comfortable with his forward play. The injury return of Luke Shaw could just do the trick.
Manchester United have pursued the likes of Victor Lindelof, Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic in this summer’s transfer window. A fourth signing has been on the horizon for a while, but it appears that Mourinho is comfortable with the current squad as it is.
