Manchester United were linked with a number of attacking playmakers in the summer transfer window but in the end, they only managed to lure Antony from Ajax.
If reports in the media are anything to go by then the Red Devils even agreed personal terms to sign Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven.
According to a recent report covered by The Athletic, Man United agreed a contract with the Dutch international but they did not make an offer to get his signing done.
The news source have revealed that Ajax continued to increase the asking price for Antony and Ten Hag decided to keep Elanga. Therefore, the club decided against submitted a bid for Gakpo. PSV were asking for a fee of £52.3million (Eindhovens Dagblad).
The 23-year-old attacker was absolutely fantastic in the last campaign and deservedly won the Dutch Footballer of the Year award.
In all competitions, the Oranje star scored 21 goals and provided 15 assists last term. On the other hand, he has been brilliant in the current campaign as well.
Thus far, the 7-capped international has featured in 12 games for the Eredivisie giants and directly contributed in 15 goals (9 goals and 6 assists).
Gakpo has mainly excelled on the left flank and at the moment, the first choice left winger is big money signing, Jadon Sancho, who has been in top form this season. The England international scored the opening goal of the game against Sheriff last night.
On the other hand, the likes of Elanga, Rashford and even Martial can play on the left wing. Therefore, the Old Trafford outfit have ample quality and depth in the position.
In all fairness, Ten Hag should sign a proven out and out striker to improve the squad in the next transfer window. What do you think?
