Manchester United are on the verge of signing Lisandro Martinez and have actually agreed a huge deal with Ajax to hire his services.
Initially, Man Utd moved in with an offer worth £39.6million (The Mirror) and then raised it to £43million (The Daily Mail) but the Dutch champions kept on demanding £50million (The Telegraph).
Transfer: Man Utd agree £31.2million contract to sign star – Report
As per reports in the British media, after weeks of negotiations, the Old Trafford outfit have been able to agree a fee worth £46million (The Mail and The Telegraph).
However, a few hours ago, De Telegraaf, revealed that Man United have actually agreed a deal worth £54.4million (65 million euros) for Martinez.
Martinez is set to be the third most expensive sale in the history of the Eredivisie club, behind only Frenkie de Jong (Barca) and Matthijs de Ligt (Juventus).
The Dutch news source state that Ajax are letting the player move to Old Trafford with a heavy heart and the pain is only reduced thanks to the high fee agreed with the Red Devils.
Ajax have really played this well. It is reported that the first bid they received for the Argentine star was just 30 million euros (from Arsenal). So, for the Netherlands champions to eventually end up negotiating a deal worth 65 million euros is actually amazing. They were able to use the interest from the Gunners and the Red Devils to consistently raise the price.
Nevertheless, the good thing is that Ten Hag is finally getting his man. Let’s hope that the South American center half can live up to the massive £54.4million price tag and improve the defense at Old Trafford.
