Manchester United continue to chase Frenkie de Jong but the deal is becoming complicated.

According to Sport, last month, Barcelona warned the midfielder that his contract renewal had illegal aspects and the Blaugrana could take legal action.

Transfer: Man United agree fee to sign 114,000 a week decorated star – Report

His entourage believes the message was only sent to force the player out of the club, who had a firm offer from Manchester United on the table.

Club president, Joan Laporta, and manager, Xavi Hernandez, have stepped in to reduce the tensions but they have also insisted De Jong to reduce his salary to help the club.

The Catalan news source claim De Jong has made it clear that neither does he want to be transferred nor will he accept to lower his wages.

The former Ajax man’s contract is worth 16 million euros a year i.e. £260,000 a week but Barcelona cannot afford to pay the wages and want him to take a 40% pay cut (El Pais and AS)

Sport report that to secure the signing, both Man United and Chelsea are willing pay the salary that De Jong should receive at the Nou Camp but the midfielder has refused to negotiate with the Premier League sides.

The transfer saga may drag on till the final days of the summer transfer window and after a poor start to the new season, the Red Devils really cannot afford to wait for that long to improve the midfield.

Man United must act swiftly to strengthen things in the center and are pressing to sign Adrien Rabiot, who is willing to move to Old Trafford if his financial demands are met.

Will Frenkie de Jong reunite with Erik ten Hag this summer? We shall see.

  1. The best thing for him is to move away from Barcelona and pitch tent with Man U. Not Champions League this season doesn’t mean we will not play Champions League next season.
