Man Utd ‘advancing relentlessly’ to sign £50.5m regista from Spain – Report

Zubimendi Sociedad celebrating

Man Utd are neck deep in their pursuit of a Casemiro replacement and have identified different names for this position. PSG’s out-of-favour midfielder Manuel Ugarte seems the most likely option with the agreement almost done between the two clubs.

As per Diario AS [image at the end of the article], Man Utd are ‘advancing relentlessly’ for Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi. The Spaniard came on against England in the Euros finals and turned the game on its head.

The report adds that Zubimendi has a contract with the Spanish club until 2027 and a release clause similar to Kubo – £50.5m. If the Red Devils trigger the clause, Real Sociedad will be left with no choice but to sell.

Zubimendi is known for his calmness on the ball and intelligent defending. He is also a reliable aerial duelist and wins his fair share of second balls.

Tottenham and Arsenal have also been credited with interest in the Spanish international in the past.

Ugarte still seems like the priority target for Man Utd but it is never advisable to put all the eggs into one basket. Pursuing Zubimendi will also send a message to PSG that they need to act quickly and finalize a sale.

At this point, this just feels like a negotiation tactic from Dan Ashworth & co. to force PSG’s hand. However, even if it were true and we brought in Zubimendi, it would be as good a signing as Ugarte if not better.

The only concern with respect to Zubimendi would be if he can adapt to the physicality of the Premier League. The diminutive midfielder might struggle to replicate the same kind of success he has had in La Liga, which might not be the case with Ugarte.

Regardless, Man Utd are far along in their pursuit of the Uruguayan international. It’ll take something sensational for that move to break down and for the club to sign Zubimendi but it’s good to see that the club is considering its options.
