Manchester United need to sign a natural defensive midfielder to replace veteran Nemanja Matic, who has mainly warmed the bench under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
In such a scenario, a former Old Trafford star in the form of Paul Parker has backed the club to agree signing of Declan Rice from West Ham United.
Transfer: Man Utd ready to attack to sign £34million wanted star – Report
The retired 56-year-old defender told MEN:
“The way he (Rice) plays, the authority he plays with, he nicks balls off people’s toes, he very rarely gets booked. United don’t really have anyone like that, the only one is ageing, Nemanja Matic, there’s no-one else in that role who can play.”
The 22-year-old had an impressive campaign with the Hammers, who will be playing Europa League football next season, and the young play breaker has been brilliant for the Three Lions at the Euro 2020. On Sunday, he could become a European Champion if England end up beating Italy in the final.
The 21-capped international would be able to play Champions League football if he opts to move to Old Trafford and MEN have previously reported that he is interested in joining Man Utd.
West Ham legend, Paulo Di Canio, is a huge admirer of the defensive midfielder. He told talkSPORT:
“He’s a fantastic guy because he’s a specialist in this position in midfield.”
Man Utd star Lingard proved to be a huge success for the Hammers (on loan) last term and reports even suggested that he could be used in a deal to lure Rice, who is valued at over £80million, however, the attacker is not keen on securing such a deal (ESPN).
The holding midfield star still has a long term contract with the London based club (2024) and he is in top form, so, there is no way he would be available for cheap. In your view, should the Red Devils break the bank to sign him for next season?
