Manchester United are desperately looking to reinforce their backline to replace Raphael Varane and have been linked with numerous quality players.
The name of Riccardo Calafiori has been in the focus for some time. Last month, reports in Italy indicated that Man Utd are plotting a move to sign the Azzurri center half.

Moreover, reports in Spain suggested that the Red Devils are even willing to submit an offer to lure the player from Bologna.
However, as per the latest update, Man Utd have been dealt a blow as Arsenal are in the lead to close the signing of Calafiori.
As per today’s version of Corriere dello Sport, Arsenal tabled a formal £46.6m (55 million euros) bid ‘last night’ and made the decisive push to ‘close’ the operation.
The Rome based media outlet have mentioned that the Gunners were aware of the stiff competition to lure the 22-year-old defender.
Therefore, they acted fast and to ‘burn the competition’, offered a complex package that has put them in a position to rapidly conclude the deal.
Apart from the £46.6m bid, the north London club have also offered a contract that will make Calafiori earn 4 million euros a season.
A massive pay rise for the Italian, who, as per CorSport, only takes home around 750,000 a season.
Last summer, Man Utd were after Timber but Arsenal were able to win the race to sign the Dutchman. This time around, it seems the Gunners will beat the Red Devils to lure Calafiori.
It must be remembered that Arteta’s men had the best defense last term that only let in 29 goals in the Premier League.
In contrast, United conceded twice more i.e. 58 goals in the league and finished 8th in the table. The question is, who should Ten Hag sign to reinforce the backline at Old Trafford?
