Manchester United have been linked with Ivan Rakitic for a very long time and the Croatian international is once again in the lime light.
Back in January 2019, the Barcelona star was on the radar (AS) of the Red Devils but in the end, he stayed put with the Catalan giants.
Transfer: Contact made – Man Utd eager to sign £80,000-a-week star – Face competition
In the summer transfer window last year, the Old Trafford club even made an offer worth 35 million euros but the Spanish champions opted to reject the move (Sport). In October, the Red Devils once again made contact with the La Liga club to hire the services of the veteran midfielder, who has got a release clause of 125 million euros (£106million) in his contract (Sport).
Now, ESPN have claimed that Solskjaer is desperate to lure a midfield star and the Red Devils have inquired about signing the 31-year-old before the transfer deadline. It is mentioned that the former Sevilla man, whose current deal will expire next year, is up for sale and could be lured for just a fee of 20 million euros.
Rakitic has won every major prize with Barcelona and was a key member of the squad that won the league title last term. In all competitions, he made 54 appearances and directly contributed in 15 goals under Valverde.
However, since the arrival of Dutch international Frenkie De Jong at the Nou Camp, the ex Schalke midfielder has mainly warmed the bench and has only managed to start 7 league games so far in the current campaign.
The 106-capped international is a proven star and has got ample quality and experience to improve Man Utd, who badly need to strengthen their midfield with players like McTominay and record signing Pogba out injured.
As per ESPN, United’s wish to sign Ivan Rakitic might not be fulfilled because the Croat wishes to keep his family in Spain.
