According to Don Balon, Manchester United could agree a deal with Real Madrid for Raphael Varane this summer, with president Florentino Perez unconvinced by the 25-year-old and wanting a new defensive partner for Sergio Ramos.
Varane has made 233 appearances for Real since his 2011-move from RC Lens, winning four Champions League trophies, two La Liga titles and one Copa Del Rey. The French international was a regular last season, making 44 appearances in all competitions, but his future appears to be uncertain.
The £62m-rated defender spent most of the previous campaign alongside Ramos but Don Balon believe Perez doesn’t trust him to be a long-term solution at the back – despite his seven years of service at the Santiago Bernabéu. As a result, Real could entertain a sale this summer and United are hoping to capitalise.
Manager Jose Mourinho signed Varane during his time as Real manager and is keen to bring the 25-year-old to Old Trafford as he could be losing up to three defenders ahead of next season.
Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo were both out of favour last season and will be out of contract next year, while Victor Lindelof has been linked with a loan move away from Manchester after a disappointing debut campaign.
If the trio leave, United will need a stellar replacement and Barcelona’s Samuel Umtiti has recently committed his future to the Spaniards, so he’s now off the table.
