It looks like a summer of defensive overhaul at Man Utd. The club has needed an upgrade in this area for quite some time now. For seasons now, managers have had to make do with the likes of Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans (last season).
Whilst they are not bad players by any stretch of the imagination, a club of the Red Devils’ stature needs to do better.

It is not like the club have not tried to correct this situation before. Lisandro Martinez was a great success story in his first season but was out injured for the majority of the second. Raphael Varane showed his class whenever not injured during his stint at Old Trafford.
Even this summer, Man Utd signed the talented Leny Yoro but the French wonderkid has suffered an injury in pre-season which will keep him out for three months.
The Red Devils have also made a double bid for Bayern duo – Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui.
As per Spanish publication AS, Man Utd are now set to turn their attention to a young centre-back playing for Real Madrid – Joan Martinez. Nicknamed Ramos 2.0, Madridistas are excited for the second coming of their club legend.
Carlo Ancelotti has already placed a lot of trust in the 16-year-old, giving him a chance to play against AC Milan in the pre-season friendly in Chicago. The club have also not signed a new centre-back this summer, despite Nacho Fernandez’s exit.
At Real Madrid, they see Martinez as the future in defence. There is no reason for the club to entertain an offer for him this summer or anytime in the near future. The 1.9m centre-back rejected many high-profile clubs in Spain, including Barcelona to choose the Los Blancos.
In the Premier League, both Man Utd and Chelsea have ‘already moved’ for the teenager. However, it’s better for the Red Devils to focus on more realistic targets and banging on Real Madrid’s door is likely to fall only on deaf ears.
Right now, wrapping up transfers for Mazraoui and De Ligt must be a priority for the Red Devils. Joan Martinez is the future of Real Madrid and Man Utd can forget his pursuit.
