Diogo Dalot has been a revelation for Man Utd over the last couple of seasons. A case can be made that he was the club’s best player last season in a difficult season for the Red Devils. However, Aaron Wan-Bissaka has continued to divide opinion.
Defensively, the English full-back is right up there with one of the very best in the world. However, his attacking quality leaves a lot to be desired and this has often frustrated fans. All things considered, Man Utd can do with an upgrade.
Transfer: Man Utd now prepare offer to finally seal signing of £10.9million star – Report
That upgrade could come in the form of Inter Milan wing-back Denzel Dumfries. We covered a story back in May revealing that the Dutch defender was prepared to agree a move to Old Trafford this summer with his fee being lowered to £25.7m.
Now, as per the Athletic, an idea of a swap deal is being discussed by the intermediaries which would see Wan-Bissaka move to Inter Milan and Dumfries join Man Utd. However, it must be added that talks are still in the preliminary stages and nothing is advanced.
Dumfries is one of the best wing-backs in the world. His attacking abilities are next to none in his preferred position and he has the recovery pace to help him out defensively when needed. However, his best football has come when he has a back three behind him.
At Man Utd, the Dutchman might have to play as a right-back as opposed to a right wing-back unless Erik ten Hag chooses to change his system. Although it sounds like a simple switch on paper, there are many more complexities to be taken into account.
When playing with a back four, both full-backs are tasked with much more defensive responsibility and this might prevent Dumfries from bringing out his best. That said, the 28-year-old is talented and experienced enough to adapt his game.
It all comes back to the original question: Will Dumfries be an upgrade on Aaron Wan-Bissaka? Well, only time can tell us that. If this move happens, Ten Hag will be bringing yet another Dutchman to the Old Trafford. It remains to be seen how this transfer pans out.
