Man Utd looking to finally sign £55million player who wanted OT move years ago

Dayot Upamecano

Manchester United have spent a lot of cash to reinforce their central defense over the years but the back-line has not improved much.

If reports in the media are anything to go by then Man Utd are looking to sign French international Dayot Upacemano to strengthen the defense.

Transfer: Man United could agree early deal at huge fee to sign £130,000-a-week star – Report

According to an exclusive story covered by The Sun, the Les Bleus star, who turns 22 today, wanted to move to Old Trafford back in 2015 but the Red Devils did not meet Valenciennes’ asking price.

The French club were demanding a fee of £700,000 but the Premier League giants were only willing to offer £500,000. In the end, the player ended up signing for Austrian side RB Salzburg.

Now, with RB Leipzig, Upamecano is one of the top defenders in the Bundesliga. He was a key member of Nagelsmann’s squad that reached the last four of the UEFA Champions League last season.

The Sun claim that Man United are still looking to sign him but the young defender is going to cost a lot. His current contract will expire in 2023 and the German side value him at around £55million.

This term, the 3-capped international has so far featured in 5 league games for Leipzig, who are currently the leaders in Germany, and helped them keep 2 clean sheets (conceded just 3 goals).

Man Utd have already let in 12 goals in just 5 Premier League appearances in the current campaign. They do have quality and depth in the fullback positions but central defense is still a concern.

Harry Maguire was supposed to be the leader of the side but the England international has been out of form since the incident in Greece. In all fairness, Chelsea should have won a penalty when the former Leicester star grappled Azpilicueta.

Have your say – Do you think Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should sign a central defender in the winter transfer window. Should Man Utd move to lure Dayot Upamecano?

  1. I think that Ole Gunnar Solksjaer should get the player he wants and not one who others would want to force upon him. Remember that behind the ironman facade lies a heart that cares dearly for the Club. Only he knows the kind of player he needs and who would fit into the role for only he knows the strategy/ strategies he would want to use to move the Club forward. Whatever the pundits say, OGS is in charge: not they. Trust him to do what’s best for the Club. Glory! Glory! Manchester United!
