For the third summer window in a row, this transfer saga continues to haunt us when it appears crystal clear that the player doesn’t want to buy into the project at Man Utd. When will the club learn?

Yes, it is that time of the year again. Frenkie de Jong to Man Utd. As per TDF, the Red Devils are trying again to sign the Dutch international this summer and are preparing to bid around £42.9m to secure his services.

The report adds that the player wants to earn a wage similar to what he earns at Barcelona to consider an exit.

The 27-year-old currently earns a whopping €1,109,808 per week on his current deal with the Spanish club which would translate to around £952,459 per week for Man Utd.

That is a frankly outrageous salary for Man Utd to afford to bring him to the club this summer. Considering Frenkie has been missing for months now with a mysterious ankle injury, it further indicates the point that this transfer doesn’t make sense.

There is no doubting Frenkie’s pedigree or quality but he is not what Man Utd need. The 27-year-old is unlikely to work well in tandem with Kobbie Mainoo as both do not have the defensive aptitude to cover for each other.

Furthermore, it’s almost unlikely that Frenkie will agree to join Man Utd in a season where we don’t have Champions League football. Even if he was, there is no way Dan Ashworth & co. should consider bringing him on such wages.

It’s time we move past Frenkie as a transfer target, once and for all. If there is an opportunity when his contract expires in 2026, we can think about it. Until then, it’s time we focus on realistic targets that would improve the team and not complement it.
