If you had to build a word cloud of the different issues plaguing Manchester United so far this season, the one that pops out in the biggest proportion might actually end up being their lack of goals from their designated strikers.
There have been different issues that have affected the club under Erik ten Hag and then Ruben Amorim but this has arguably been one factor that has seen no improvement despite transitioning managers.
News – Man Utd have made contact to sign £83.2million Liverpool target – Report
Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee are both relatively young in their careers and the former has proven to be very inconsistent in front of goal while the latter seems to be more comfortable playing in a withdrawn number 10 role than putting him upfront as the number nine.
Thus, Man Utd might be forced into making a striker signing in the summer who can help alleviate these issues.
One player that Man Utd have been linked with in the past as per Caught Offside is FC Porto striker, Samu Aghehowa, who has been very impressive so far this season.
The ex-Atletico Madrid number nine is a natural goal scorer and is one of those rare top strikers that Spain has produced in recent times.
The Red Devils have already sent scouts to watch him and the interest is obvious. The report also mentions that the youngster has a lofty £83million release clause in his contract which is a clear indication of the ceiling Porto perceive him to possess.
Now, as per Give Me Sport, Man Utd are plotting a move to finally sign the talented Spanish striker.
The 20-year-old has displayed clinical touch in front of goal so far for Porto, scoring 13 goals and providing 3 assists so far in 15 league starts.
Those numbers are very good for a player that young but there will be question marks over whether he can translate the same kind of goalscoring in the Premier League.
Should Man Utd sign Samu Aghehowa?
One would wonder why Man Utd would want to sign yet another young striker after the experience with Rasmus Hojlund.
Of course, the Dane is talented but the Red Devils are not getting the return on investment that they would have expected when they signed him from Atalanta. That said, the 22-year-old has never been a prolific goal-scorer during his career, unlike the numbers that Samu is putting up.
Aghehowa had an incredible summer before this season began, impressing with Spain in the Olympic Games where they ended up with the gold medal.
It was these performances combined with his form on loan last season that prompted Porto to pay the money to sign him from Atletico Madrid. Why Diego Simeone’s men chose to let him go is something that is not quite clear yet!
It remains to be seen if Man Utd actually make a concrete effort to sign Samu Aghehowa in the coming months. There is an argument to be made here for the Red Devils to sign someone with much more experience, preferably in the Premier League (Chris Wood, anyone?) instead of betting on another young striker but let’s wait and see how Ruben Amorim & co. go about making this decision.
Have your say – Should Man Utd splash the cash to sign Samu Aghehowa?
