Manchester United continue to generate a lot of smoke in the January transfer window without there being much fire yet.
Their most high-profile activity of the current market has been the impending loan move of Antony, who has been sent to Real Betis with an attempt to revive a career that seems to be going absolutely nowhere.
News – Deal closer – Manchester United now ready to strike £50.6million agreement for player sale
While the Red Devils continue to work hard to sort out exits for other players in the squad that Ruben Amorim doesn’t fancy having, they will also need to keep an eye out on the players that they can bring in, to reinforce the squad and help the Portuguese coach out.
There isn’t much time left in the month and the Red Devils need to step up.
One player that Man Utd were linked with recently was Sporting CP defender Ousmane Diomande. The Ivory Coast international is said to have a £67.6m release clause in his contract but it had been reported that Amorim’s former club would be willing to part ways with him for a fee of around £50.6m.
Now, as per Spanish publication, Fichajes, Man Utd are willing to pay the asking price of £50.6m to sign Ousmane Diomande.
TF view:
Diomande is as versatile as they come when it comes to a defender. He is capable of playing at his favored centre-back position, on the right-side as a full-back or wing-back and can even deputize in defensive midfield when needed. By signing him, Man Utd would successfully be killing two-three birds with one stone.
Having played in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 system previously at Sporting and knowing exactly what the manager expects, Diomande should settle into the team at Old Trafford quite seamlessly.
Without a doubt, the Ivorian defender would add a lot of defensive steel to the backline and also help others understand the coach’s tactics better.
For a team in transition like Manchester United are, there is a cap on the number of signings they can make at any given time. This isn’t career mode on EA FC to sign whoever they want and for Man Utd to go on and win all the trophies in one season. In reality, football simply doesn’t work this way.
Thus, signing someone like Diomande who can plug more than just one hole in the team could be the perfect play. Let’s wait and see if Manchester United actually make a concrete effort to sign him this transfer window and only time will tell how it plays out.
