Man Utd ready to step up, consider move to steal signing of £34million player

Ibrahima Konate RB Leipzig

Liverpool have been heavily linked with Ibrahima Konate and reports last month even suggested that the Reds are close to finalizing the signing of the RB Leipzig defender (The Athletic).

However, more recently, it has been reported that the French starlet is on the radar of Manchester United as well.

Transfer: Man Utd plot offer of £25million man to sign £70million star – Report

Dean Jones (Euro Sport) claims that Man Utd are ready to step up their efforts to sign a central defender in the summer transfer window and they are eyeing the signing of Konate.

The renowned journalist has mentioned that the Leipzig defender would cost around £34million and the Old Trafford outfit need to decide quickly whether to move for him or pursue other targets.

The 21-year-old had a fantastic 2018-19 campaign for the German club but in the past year and a half, he has mostly been on the treatment table due to muscle and ankle issues.

In the 2019-20 season, the youngster only managed to start 6 games in the Bundesliga and spent majority of the time out injured.

As far as this season is concerned, he has only started 9 games in all competitions (4 in the league). He did return to full fitness in February but Julian Nagelsmann has not preferred him in the starting XI. Konate started his last league game back in December last year against Hoffenheim.

In all fairness, Man Utd need a leader in the defense, someone who can command the backline effectively. More importantly, they need someone fit who is ever present for Solskjaer. Therefore, it is better for Man Utd to avoid signing of an injury prone player like Ibrahima Konate.
