Manchester United were looking to sign a top center half in the summer transfer window and they ended up luring Harry Maguire from Leicester City for a huge fee of (The Mail) £80million.

If reports in the media are anything to go by then the Reds are still interested in a highly rated central defender.

In May, Man Utd were looking to lure Portuguese international and Benfica defender Ruben Dias, who had a release clause of 60 million euros back then (Correio da Manha).

However, the 22-year-old Seleccao star eventually stayed with the Primeira Liga giants and even signed a new deal, which will expire in 2024 and has an increased release clause of 88 million euros (£80million) (A Bola).

As per a recent report covered by A Bola (via Sport Witness), Manchester United sent their officials to monitor the performance of the young defender when Benfica played against Braga on Sunday.

In the last campaign, Dias was impressive for the Eagles in the league and and helped them win the Portuguese title. He was not only solid at the back but also productive in the attacking third. In all competitions, he directly contributed in 7 goals (4 goals and 3 assists).

Still, it must be remembered that Benfica conceded no fewer than 13 goals in the group stages of the UCL and Dias was completely average. Not to forget, he was shown red card within 45 minutes of the fixture vs AEK Athens away from home.

Dias is represented by Gestifute, an agency owned by renowned agent Jorge Mendes.

As far as United’s central defense is concerned, even after loaning out Chris Smalling to Roma, Solskjaer has got players like Lindelof, Bailly, Rojo, Jones and the most expensive defender in the world in the form of Maguire.

So, the Red Devils do have an over-crowded central defender but they have conceded 4 goals in 4 PL outings so far this season. In your view, do they need to further strengthen their back-line?
