Manchester United have been interested in hiring the services of Gedson Fernandes but the Benfica star has opted to sign for Tottenham.
On 31st December, Sky Sports revealed that the Red Devils are looking to sign the 21-year-old midfielder in the January transfer window and the Primeira Liga club’s representatives have been in England to strike a loan deal.
Transfer: Man Utd make final check, could move to sign £51million midfielder
However, yesterday, the British source reported that the Portuguese international has completed his medical with Spurs to join countryman Jose Mourinho. It is mentioned that the official confirmation could be made soon. He will join on an 18-month loan deal and the north Londoners have the option to sign him permanently for £56million.
Fernandes can play in multiple midfield positions but naturally he plays in the CM role. The youngster has played in 29 league games for the Portuguese giants but is yet to open his account in the Liga Nos.
This season, he played 13 games in all competitions for Benfica and provided just 1 assist. So, the stats look highly average for a creative central midfielder and missing out on signing him should not hurt the Red Devils faithful.
Gedson Fernandes’ compatriot, Bruno Fernandes, who has been highly impressive for Sporting CP, is now reportedly close to joining us. Earlier in the day, we covered a report claiming that the 25-year-old has already agreed personal terms to sign for Man Utd (JN).
The Lions skipper is mainly an attacking midfielder, who has the quality to improve our offense. Still, Solskjaer should also look to sign a central midfielder after failing to lure one in the summer. With McTominay and record signing Pogba out injured, we clearly lack quality and depth in the the center of the park and the department must be reinforced this month.
