Manchester United desperately need to sign a top quality central defender and once again, they are linked with Portuguese international Ruben Dias.
Earlier this month, Record reported that the Red Devils are interested in signing the Benfica starlet, who has a release clause of 60 million euros (£53million) and the Portuguese giants are demanding full payment of his clause for his departure.
Transfer: £75million star close to Manchester United move
Yesterday, Correio da Manha published a report with a headline stating “Manchester United want Ruben Dias” and in the very first line, they have stated that the 22-year-old central defender might be on his way to England.
The Portuguese outlet have talked about United’s desire to sign a top central defender and their failed pursuit of Napoli superstar Koulibaly. They claim that Dias has all the attributes to go to Old Trafford, he is five year’s younger than the Senegalese international and would be a cheaper option as well.
Opinion:
In the Primeira Liga, Dias was solid at the back for Benfica and helped them win the title. Moreover, in the attacking third, he scored 4 goals and provided 3 assists in all competitions.
However, the Portuguese club conceded 13 goals in the Champions League group stages and Dias was completely average. He was even sent off against AEK Athens. So, I am not quite sure that he has what it takes to lead our defense.
Not to forget, Lindelof used to be a top defender for Benfica but he has been inconsistent at Old Trafford. Apart from the Swedish star, Solskjaer has got more than a few central defenders in his team with players like Jones, Smalling, Rojo and Bailly around.
Unfortunately, none of the above mentioned Man Utd players have stepped up to become the leader of the back-line.
We need a complete star, who would command the entire defensive unit. Someone, who would setup the offside line, guide the fullbacks when to run forward and track back and order the midfielders to cover defensive areas when needed etc. In addition, if he is able to score goals as well then that would be great.
In short, he should be able to do what Van Dijk did for Liverpool this season and what Kompany has done for Manchester City over the years.
I think the fans would be more than delighted if we can get someone like Koulibaly or De Ligt.
