Manchester United £75,000-A-Week Midfielder Could Join Atletico Madrid — Spanish Reports

Atletico Madrid are reportedly planning a move for Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera, who has just eight months left on his present deal. The Spain international is being seen as a potential replacement for club-captain Gabi.

According to Spanish outlet AS, the Capital outfit are hoping to discuss a pre-contract agreement in the New Year, where £75,000-a-week player will be free to speak to foreign clubs. The 28-year-old has previously plyed his trade for Real Zaragoza and Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish La Liga, and Atleti are planning to tempt him to make a return home.

Nevertheless, United have the advantage in Herrera’s situation as they have the option of a one-year extension on his contract. Jose Mourinho’s side triggered a similar clause in Marouane Fellaini’s contract earlier in January, and they could opt for the same with Herrera, should he prolong contractual negotiations.

Herrera was Mourinho’s go-to man last campaign as he played a crucial role in United’s EFL Cup and Europa League success. However, the new season has not gone as planned with just five starts in the top-flight – four of which have come during injuries to midfield duo Paul Pogba and Marouane Fellaini.

The Basque player is likely to warm the substitutes’ bench when the pair return to full fitness, and this could hamper his chances of making the Spain squad, which is blessed with plenty of creative talent.

United could offload Herrera for a reasonable price in the January transfer window, but this does not look an option at the moment with Mourinho exploring the opportunity of signing another midfielder – amid the uncertainty surrounding Fellaini.
