Manchester United are reportedly in the clear to sign Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic after Juventus pulled out of the race for his services. The Serbia international is on the search for a new club this summer as he is no longer guaranteed a starting role at Stamford Bridge.
The Red Devils have intensified their search for a new central midfielder in recent weeks with Matic, Eric Dier and Marco Verratti among the names propping up their summer shortlist. A recent report suggested that the Serbian had been given the green light to discuss terms with Jose Mourinho’s United after Blues owner Roman Abramovich personally intervened to sanction a proposed move.
And, the Red Devils have now received a further boost in the pursuit of Matic with Juventus having ended their interest in his signature, Corriere dello Sport claims. The Blues have placed a £40m price tag on the Serbian’s head for the summer, and this has proved too much for the Old Lady, who are also looking to bolster their backline following Leonardo Bonucci’s departure to AC Milan.
The 28-year-old is said to be keen on a reunion with Jose Mourinho this summer, and Blues boss Antonio Conte is likely to permit the move following the signing of Tiemoue Bakayoko from AS Monaco. Matic has proved a huge hit during his time in west London – barring the 2015/16 campaign, and his precise passing and ability to move forward in crunch situations could make him the perfect midfield partner for the likes of Paul Pogba and Ander Herrera.
