Erik ten Hag’s reign at Old Trafford started in the worst possible manger with a home defeat at the hands of Brighton.
The Red Devils must bounce back this weekend against Brentford knowing that they face arch rivals Liverpool in two weeks’ time.
In case you want to earn money, punting on the United fixtures is an option or luck can be tried out at Koi.
Of all the departments at Old Trafford, midfield is the weakest and if Ten Hag does not strengthen things in the center of the park, then we can forget about finishing in the top four for another season.
Our record signing, Paul Pogba, left the club again on a free transfer and we have not signed anyone to replace him. On the other hand, our only defensive midfielder, Nemanja Matic, also left the club on a bosman to join Roma and without a solid play breaker, we can forget about competing this season.
The question is who will solve the midfielder conundrum. We look at some of the names heavily linked with Manchester United.
Frenkie de Jong
Manchester United have consistently pressed to hire the services of the Dutch international but the transfer saga has dragged on without any conclusion thus far.
The 25-year-old star worked under the guidance of Ten Hag at Ajax and rose to fame before completing his move to Barcelona. The Netherlands coach knows all about the qualities of the midfielder and he is the ideal player to strengthen the midfield.
De Jong can effectively play in multiple positions, he is usually the first player to receive the ball from the defense and then guides the play.
However, the latest reports indicate that Chelsea could end up getting his signing done.
Ruben Neves
The Portuguese international has proved his worth in the Premier League for Wolverhampton Wanderers and now, he needs to step up in his career.
As per a recent story covered by Sky Sports, the Old Trafford outfit are interested in luring the Seleccao star if they fail to lure De Jong.
Never is mainly a defensive midfielder, who can effectively break play and also act as a deep lying playmaker. Moreover, the former Porto man is a specialist from dead balls situation and strike long range goals as well.
He has impressed against United on several occasions but he is not going to come for cheap. A fee of more than 80 million euros would be needed to get his signing done.
Matheus Nunes
Another Portuguese star on United’s radar is Matheus Nunes. The 23-year-old is one of the key members of the Sporting CP squad and he wants to move to the Premier League.
He won the Primeira Liga title in the 2020-21 campaign under the management of Ruben Amorim, who does not want to lose him this summer. The Lions star directly contributed in 9 goals in all competition last term.
Recently, he has rejected a proposal from Wolves and is waiting to complete a move to big English club. The Red Devils are 20-time champions but the dilemma is that in the current campaign, they cannot offer Champions League football.
Liverpool and Man City are linked with Nunes as well and they can offer him the chance to feature in the Europe’s elite competition. His current contract with the Liga Nos side has a release clause of 60 million euros but he can be lured for a fee of around 50 million euros.
Adrien Rabiot
The French international is heavily linked with a move to Manchester United and recent reports indicate that personal terms are being discussed to hire his services.
Rabiot is a decorated midfielder, he has won every single domestic title on multiple occasions in France. Moreover, since moving to Italy in 2019, he has won every major domestic trophy with Juventus.
However, the reason he is last on our list is because he is not creative and did not score a single goal last term despite making more than 40 appearances for the Bianconeri.
On the other hand, the Les Bleus midfielder is slow and might not fit into Ten Hag’s style of play where the players are consistently required to press. Will he be a hit in the PL? We shall see.
In your opinion, who should Man Utd sign to finally solve the midfield conundrum.
