Manchester United have reportedly knocked back a surprise approach from Tottenham Hotspur to sign French forward Anthony Martial. The 21-year-old was in-and-out of the United lineup last season, and he was restricted to just 19 starts in the Premier League.
Despite this, the France international remains an influential player under Jose Mourinho after he provided key assists in pre-season friendlies against Real Madrid and Valerenga.
According to RMC Sport, Spurs had lodged a transfer offer for the former AS Monaco man, but it was without success as the Red Devils swiftly turned down the move.
Martial was left on the bench during United’s 2-1 European Super Cup loss to Real Madrid on Tuesday night, but Mourinho still considers the Frenchman as a key member of his first-team squad.
The Red Devils have previously snubbed a loan approach from Inter Milan for Martial – in a deal which could have seen Ivan Perisic join the club for a relatively lower fee than his £48m valuation.
Meanwhile, the manager has also stressed that Martial remains as important as the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford as the plan is to have ‘good squad rather than just a good team‘.
Martial has notched 25 goals in 91 appearances across all competitions for Manchester United since arriving from AS Monaco under former boss Louis van Gaal in September 2015.
