Real Madrid Lining Up Surprise Move For Manchester United Stalwart: Reports

Real Madrid could reportedly consider an approach for Jose Mourinho midway through the season should Zinedine Zidane fail to turn the club’s fortunes in La Liga.

The Spanish champions are presently eight points behind leaders Barcelona in third place after they suffered a shocking 2-1 defeat to Catalan minnows Girona on Sunday.

According to Don Balon, Mourinho is among the potential candidates on Florentino Perez’s shortlist, which also includes Germany head coach Joachim Loew.

However, the report suggests that the 54-year-old is unlikely to consider a return to the Bernabeu, having involved himself in an impressive project with the Red Devils.

Mourinho has significantly improved the squad over the past 16 months, and he will be more concerned over United’s Premier League pursuit rather than dwindling over issues with former club Madrid.

The gaffer has recently claimed that he does not see himself retiring at Old Trafford, but this is unlikely to be something to worry about with United planning talks over a potential extension beyond 2019.

Manchester United have virtually secured a berth in the last-16 of the Champions League following a 2-0 triumph over Benfica last night, and the focus will now switch to the key Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea.
