Report – £50m Man Utd target prefers to sign for Liverpool

Erik ten Hag - Manchester United manager

Manchester United must improve their midfield department this summer but lack of Champions League football is proving to be the main stumbling block.

We do know that our priority target, Frenkie de Jong, does not want to move to Old Trafford because we will not be taking part in Europe’s prime tournament next season.

Transfer: Man United have submitted £50.3million+ offer for Liverpool target – Report

However, the Dutch international is not the only midfielder who will prefer to join a side with CL football.

A few weeks ago, O Jogo revealed that Man United are serious about hiring the services of Portuguese midfielder, Matheus Nunes, who has a release clause of 60 million euros in his contract with Sporting CP (£50m).

Today, Correio da Manha (as relayed by Paisley Gates) have reported that the 23-year-old would prefer to sign for our rivals, Liverpool or Man City, because they will be playing in the Champions League.

Back in 2014, Van Gaal managed to sign Di Maria and in 2016, Mourinho was able to lure stars like Pogba and Ibrahimovic without CL Football. The situation is different now.

Either Erik ten Hag does not have that pulling power or the Red Devils’ consistent struggles have made them a very unattractive destination.

Nevertheless, the midfield conundrum must be resolved. The last signing to improve the central midfield was Fred and the Brazilian international was lured by Mourinho back in 2018.

Have your say – Who should Man Utd sign to strengthen things in the center of the park?
