Report – Man United clear to secure £16.8million signing in an hour

Manchester United are looking for a top defensive midfielder with Ugarte’s name high on the wish-list, but they still have time to secure a cheaper alternative.

Last summer, the Red Devils hired the services of Sofyan Amrabat on loan from Fiorentina and the deal had an option to make the move permanent.

Report – Man Utd now submit £33.7m bid to sign versatile La Liga player – Decision made

As per today’s version of La Gazzetta Dello Sport (news image provided a below), the agreement between Fiorentina and Man Utd involved a purchase option worth £16.8million, 20 million euros.

That option is only valid for today (July 2021) and will expire in an hour.

The Viola and Amrabat have been waiting, with ‘certainty and definitively’, to find out whether Man Utd will pay the £16.8million for Amrabat

The Moroccan international has already said that he wants to stay in the Premier League, however, there are ‘no signs’ that the Old Trafford club will make his move permanent.

As per Gazzetta, if he does not join the English giants today, then Fiorentina will put him up for sale in the summer transfer window to boost their finances.

It will be fair to say that the Atlas Lions star was not given a fair chance last season. The 27-year-old started 17 games in all competitions under Erik ten Hag and only 12 in his preferred holding midfield role.

He proved to be top class in the final few fixtures of the campaign when Casemiro was ousted from the starting lineup due to poor form.

However, it seems Amrabat, who helped Morocco reach the semi finals of the World Cup, is not going to return to Man Utd.

Do you think he deserved a fair chance at Old Trafford or was he not good enough?

  1. Amrabat arrived injured and after the Palace cup game (which he owned) seemed to drop off in confidence and fitness, so I’m not sure he was fully fit until the end of the season because of the stark contrast of his mobility.

United have Collyer & Odeleye coming through, with both showing sustainable qualities, but it’s too early to burden them with the DM responsibility just yet.

Depending on whether Ugarte (profile makes him the main contender) is joined by Casemiro (if no takers), or if sales support bringing in Rabiot or Zubimendi (who need to start a higher proportion of games), Amrabat has a decent shout to bridge the experience gap between Ugarte and Collyer/Odeleye.
