Manchester United have been linked with Frenkie de Jong and the latest reports suggest that they are ready to agree a deal with Barcelona to sign the Dutch star. However, there is a twist.
According to a story covered by Sport (press image provided below), the Red Devils are bidding the most to sign the Netherlands international in the summer transfer window.
Transfer: Man United will now submit £55million offer to sign £68million star – Report
The Spanish news source have mentioned that the likes of PSG and Bayern Munich are interested in the former Ajax man as well but for now, only Man Utd are the ones that can pay the high asking price set by the Catalan club.
The dilemma is that the PL side cannot wait for long, they are ready to agree a fee but Sport claim that if De Jong does not make a favorable decision, then it will be useless to reach an agreement with Barcelona.
The Catalan source report that the 25-year-old has been contacted and made aware that he will be one of the mainstays of the new project under Erik ten Hag.
However, an ultimatum has been given and if De Jong replies with a ‘No’, then Man Utd will focus on signing someone else to improve their midfield in what is expected to be a very busy summer transfer window.
As far as the asking price is concerned, earlier this month, Sport revealed that the La Liga giants would sell the 40-capped star for a fee of at least £85million (100 million euros).
De Jong is a versatile talent who can effectively play in the defensive and central midfield roles. He excelled big time under Ten Hag at Ajax. It will be intriguing to see if the midfielder would like to reunite with his former boss at Man Utd, who will not play in the CL next season.
