It is not often that you see a club of Man Utd’s stature looking to sign players from a team that are currently 18th in the Championship, but that is exactly the situation the Red Devils find themselves in currently ahead of next summer.

The upcoming summer is set to be a summer of rebuild for Man Utd and while the attention will be on the flashy first-team players that they are set to be linked with, a whole squad is more than just a set of starters.

News – Report – Man United all set to secure £53.3million signing

All Man Utd need to do is to take a look at Man City and how they have retained Scott Carson in their squad as the third goalkeeper for a few years now, valuing the quality he adds off the pitch along with being able to step in on the rare occasion that he is needed.

Man Utd’s current third goalkeeper is Tom Heaton, and he is expected to leave the club on a free transfer this summer. Now, as per Football Insider, the Red Devils are closing in on signing Preston North End shot-stopper Freddie Woodman as a free agent.

Woodman is 28-years-old and plays for a team in the Championship that is currently 18th in the table. He has made 44 appearances for his club side this season, conceding 48 goals and managing to keep a quite impressive 17 clean sheets, when taken in context.

Having been quite the journeyman throughout his career, Woodman will have the quality to be able to be Man Utd’s third-choice shot-stopper. It is a position that doesn’t bring many opportunities but he will have his own responsibilities off-the-pitch.

Man Utd GK situation

Man Utd’s current first-choice shot-stopper is Andre Onana and the Cameroonian’s future at the club is far from secure.

Altay Bayindir doesn’t seem to have what it takes to step into the number one’s shoes as well and the Red Devils might be looking at replacing the ex-Inter Milan shot-stopper in the summer.

Signing a third goalkeeper is very important, but considering Man Utd’s situation currently, they will want to do it as cheaply as possible and what better way to do it than bringing in Woodman on a free transfer?

Let’s wait and see how it plays out.
