Arsenal legend Robert Pires has talked up the prospect of Anthony Martial joining the north London club during the summer. The Frenchman has endured a rather frustrating time with Manchester United since February and has been restricted to just four league starts.
The 22-year-old began the season in a relatively positive manner and was a consistent performer for the Red Devils prior to Alexis Sanchez’s arrival during the winter transfer window. Since then, he has been playing second fiddle to the Chilean on the left-wing whilst the added competition from Marcus Rashford has only dropped him further down the pecking order.
As a result, the former Monaco man has regularly been associated with a summer exit and Pires would fancy the Frenchman plying his trade for the Gunners next term, he said: “I’m a big fan of Anthony Martial.
“He’s very fast, he has excellent dribbling skills and he has the potential to score a lot of goals, but I think he has to play more football. I don’t know why he isn’t playing more for Manchester United and Jose Mourinho needs to show more confidence in him. I would welcome him at Arsenal.”
Both Rashford and Martial have endured a difficult period since Sanchez’s arrival but the latter’s future remains far from secure with reports emerging that Mourinho has given the go-ahead for his summer exit.
The 22-year-old most-recently started for Manchester United during the 1-0 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion where his performance was far from convincing. This should probably exclude him from the starting lineup for this month’s FA Cup final.
